Gunma University / Akita University COE Program Signal Transduction in the Regulatory System and Its Disorders

Greetings from the deputy leader

Takehiko Sasaki

Akita University has produced important achievements in the research into cancer and the immune system, through the 21st century COE program “Cell fate determination control.” In the present collaborative program, we will cooperate with Gunma University, which produced good results in the research into the endocrine and nervous systems, and actualize complementary education and research of “the three major regulation systems of the biological body.” The participants of this project include 7 project-promoters: Yuichiro Yamada (Geriatrics), Kenichi Sawada (Internal Medicine), Tomonori Habuchi (Urology), Yumiko Imai (Pharmacology), Akira Suzuki (Molecular Biology), Toshiaki Ohteki (Immunology), and Takehiko Sasaki (Pathology and Immunology) from Akita University Graduate School of Medicine, and senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. We will aim to elucidate the pathologic conditions of diseases, develop treatment strategies, and train international young personnel in collaboration with Gunma University.

Whether or not this collaborative program will become “fruitful” depends on not only the presidents, directors, deans, and program promoters of the two universities, but also many other people in the two universities. I believe that the cooperation of a lot of people in this program will lead to substantial results.
