Gunma University / Akita University COE Program Signal Transduction in the Regulatory System and Its Disorders

Development of new cooperation for proceeding with the Global COE

???????? ?????????????? ?? ?

Considering the development of Akita and Gunma Universities, it was delightful to hear that the jointly-applied Global COE program “the comprehensive study on biological regulation signals” was adopted after rigorous screening. In order to live up to citizens’ expectation: the formation of an excellent world-class research/education foothold in the age of local governments, our universities are required to attain the goals of promoting cutting-edge research and nurturing international researchers by coalescing every capacity. The reason why our universities’ research was adopted for the present Global COE seems to be that both universities’ steady achievements and excellent personnel development for “the 21st century COE program,” which was commenced in 2002, were highly evaluated in the interim review. Since the continuation of the COE program was accepted by society, our responsibility as the leader of local colleges became stronger. As inter-university cooperation is being more emphasized, when Akita and Gunma Universities share the outcome of cutting-edge life science research and then built a new partnership, this will become a good example of the “development of characteristic university.” Then, by proving the possibility of developing a world-class, outstanding research/education stronghold in a local area, we can stir the courage and hope of many university staff.

Adopted in the Global COE, Akita University will orchestrate competent life science researchers of our Faculty of Medicine, promote the fundamental research into immunity and cancer, etc., and take a variety of measures for developing young researchers who can pursue their research independently from a global perspective. In addition, Akita University will actively exchange credits and teaching staff with the graduate school of Gunma University, by utilizing the IT technology, etc. and hold international symposiums, and enhance the international exchange for research, such as personnel exchange with overseas research institutions. Akita and Gunma Universities aim to train ingenious personnel with advanced research/education ability, by actualizing true collaboration.

The comprehensive research into the three biological regulation systems—the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems—under the theme of “the comprehensive study on biological regulation signals” is academically pioneering. Furthermore, when both universities establish international academic networks while sharing the resources for research and education, this program will certainly become an important milestone for the Japan’s path of life science study.

We sincerely hope that the launching of the present Global COE program will contribute to not only our universities but also the advance of research and education in life science in Japan.
