Rer1 not only functions as a ER retrieval receptor for various membrane proteins including ER membrane proteins, immature and misfolded membrane proteins but also plays a role in the early-Golgi quality control system for unassembled components of membrane protein complexes such as -secretase complex. In this study, we find that Rer1 is required for a sufficient expression of g-secretase complex on the cell surface, which regulates Notch signaling for neural stem cell maintenance during mouse cerebral cortex development.
