The research group of Mucosan Ecosystem Design of the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Regulation, Gunma University, led by Prof. Nobuo Sasaki, Akira Sen, Atsuki Imai et al. analyzed physiological interaction between organoid derived from healthy human colon and Bifidobacterium longum, which is also known as probiotics, in collaboration with the Dept. of General Surgery and Future Advanced Research Institute of Gunma University, and Morinaga Milk Industry Co.
Previous studies on probiotics have used cell lines, such as Caco-2, derived from colorectal cancer patient. In this study, the research group used organoid culture system that is close to the “normal human intestinal tract”. They succeeded in confirming a more physiological response of the Bifidobacteria in organoid compared to Caco-2. These results demonstrate the usefulness of this groundbreaking evaluation system for more accurately understanding the impact of probiotics and gut microbes on our health. The results of this research are also expected to provide new guidelines for future functional evaluation in the health food and medical field.
