About

In this study, we identified Surf4 as a novel factor involved in insulin secretion from pancreatic  cells. We showed that Surf4 localizes to the ER (endoplasmic reticulum) and promotes the export of the precursor proteins (proinsulin) from the ER to the Golgi apparatus by sorting them to COPII-coated vesicles. As Surf4 promotes the export of proinsulin from the endoplasmic reticulum, it may be a new and different type of target for drug discovery that increases insulin secretion.
